TEDxHamburg Salon 2011

PD Dr. med. Andreas Block: Cancer prevention: from molecular diagnostics to a healthy lifestyle Dr. Block’s scientific investigation emphasizes on cancer research with a special focus on oncology, hematology and gastroenterology. His main concern in the field of cancer research is that of prevention via molecular diagnostics and the development of specific risk-adapted programs as well as dietary food allowance. However, the most efficient prevention method is that of dietary food allowance. He asserted that the risk to develop bowel and other types of cancer rises with the exaggerated consumption of meat.

Dr. Kai Sostmann: Self-determinedly healthy -  with the help of the internet?

At the centre, we have the emancipated patient who uses the internet as self-help source in order to diagnose a range of symptoms from harmless headaches to chronic diseases. How does this flow of information exert itself onto the patient-physician relationship? Can a patient help him-/herself to such an extent that he or she could avoid going to the doctor? This talk will explore the thin line between useful information and harmful repercussions for the health related behavior. How does sanitary expertise generate with participants of the healthcare system?

Dr. Anne Schnieber : Making healthcare transparent – how numbers can help us improve. Our health care system is one of the best in the world. Yet it remains an emotionally charged and prominent subject. Numbers in expenditure and medical failures are often abused for political agendas.

TEDxHamburg 2010: Review

Rebooting the future – a motto that leaves much room for interpretation. On May 27th, the eleven live speakers and three TED video talks definitely filled the outer shell of these three words with memorable presentations.

And why is that?
Because the speakers proved that an idea as a spark can ignite greatness: you just have to be brave enough to actually do it. The aim to inspire and encourage people to be courageous and see the chance of each one of us to make a difference definitely succeeded. It does not matter if you are a banker, monch, entrepreneur, scientist, lawyer or designer. Our range of speakers was the living proof and the Hamburg audience greatly appreciated the day.

The TEDxvideos should not be neglected, especially “Aimee Mullins and her 12 pairs of legs” left a great impression and Jane McGonigals´ “Gaming can make a better world” started some controversial talks during the breaks.

It was a long day but in the end you have to say: the seeds were sown let us see how many more ideas will bloom respectively be brought to the next level. This positive feedback encouraged us to carry on with TEDx because the ever changing world needs new ways of thinking.

The photos on Flickr give you a first impression of the day.
